Access Education's Summer School program is for students undertaking VCE in the coming year. The program is held in January each year and offers both residential and non-residential placements.
Summer School offers an exciting opportunity for students who are about to undertake VCE Units 3 and 4 to come together to further develop their educational knowledge, enjoy the university experience and start the school year ahead of the rest.

Full residential $435 per student OR $48 per lecture per student.
All lectures are open to students attending as either part of the full residential program or on a session by session basis

BIOLOGY

This program will give students an outline of the Year 12 Biology course. It will introduce students to each of the two areas of study in Unit 3 - Molecules of life & Detecting and responding. The program will also focus on content relevant to the School Assessed Coursework (SACs), provide crucial examination techniques incorporating sample questions relevant to the Unit 3 and 4 examinations. It will also provide ideas and ways in which participants can best organise themselves in a course that demands a diligent and deliberate approach to study.
CHEMISTRY
Chris Dwyer, B.Eng.(Chem,), Dip.Ed., Chemistry educator
This lecture will focus on the content and assessment of Unit 3 of VCE Chemistry- which will be examined in June 2009, with the examination worth 33% of the overall study score. In this unit students investigate the scope of techniques available to the analytical chemist and organic reaction pathways and the chemistry of particular organic molecules including aspirin and DNA.
The key knowledge associated with these areas will be outlined and discussed providing students with a good foundation for the material to be covered in their classes and likely to be assessed the School-assessed Courseworks. A significant range of associated questions will be considered.

During this interactive session all of the key topics from Units 3 & 4 will be explored, with particular focus on Unit 3. Topics that will be explored include; Measuring health status, Factors causing variation in health status, Health status of population groups, Nutrients – Functions & sources, Biomedical & preventative health care, Ottawa charter, Medicare, National Health Priority areas and Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.
Some of the key concepts from Units 1 & 2 will be built upon to enable a confident start to the year. Tips for a successful year and strategies for preparing for assessment tasks and the end of year exam will also be discussed.

MATHS METHODS

Past students’ results indicate that you need a strong understanding of the material covered in Methods 1&2 if you are to perform well at Methods 3&4. The results also show that preliminary exposure to relevant concepts and methodology are advantageous to your overall understanding of the course material. This summer school will address both of these issues. You will get a 'glimpse' of the topics, concepts and questions that are essential for your success. You will also gain an appreciation of the importance of the material you have already studied in Methods 1&2. Other features of the session will include:
- a quick overview of the Methods 1&2 course relevant to Methods 3&4,
- a look at some of the material you will cover in Methods Unit 3,
- a sample of Examination 1 and Examination 2 type questions that can already be answered with your current Methods 1&2 knowledge
- an extensive set of summary notes, practice examples and their solutions,
- a guide to creating a useful bound reference book.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This 3-hour seminar will increase students' confidence in tackling the Units 3 & 4 Psychology course by providing them with:

- a thorough overview of the mid-year and end-of-year exams, including useful preparation strategies and successful tactics to employ during the exams

- activities on Research Investigation to review variables and hypotheses
- successful strategies for staying on top of the workload.
